As a fan of music and of LEDs, I wanted to create an LED light tower that could react to music with different patterns at live experience events. I collaborated with my friend Casey on the design and manufacturing, and I also handled the programming and electronics to get everything to run.
For our final piece we used a WS2811 LED strip diffused with halves of ping pong balls, inside a custom designed frame CNCed out of plywood. It’s run by an Arduino that gets inputs through Ableton Live to react in real time to the music’s volume, but there are also pre-programmed effects like rainbow cycling and flashing.
